Tooth Extractions Prior To Implant Placement
20th January 2012
Q.
I have 10 remaining teeth and a plate for my upper front teeth, on my last visit to my dentist I was told these are now loose and need to be removed, i don't want to go to the expense of getting a new denture and then starting a plan to get denture implants done, do you remove teeth or would this have to be done first?
A.
Thank you for your question
It may be possible for you to have teeth added to your existing denture although we cannot confirm this without first seeing you for an assessment. A provisional denture may have to be produced to replace the current one, but don't worry they are not very expensive at our centres.
The reason for this is that traditional dentures and implant retained dentures are very different in design. Traditional dentures are supported by the roof of the mouth, the palate, whereas an implant overdenture is supported by dental implants.
Extractions prior to implant placement need to be carried out very carefully to avoid bone loss, damage to the jawbone laminate and ensure that the root sockets are completely free from debris, so our clinicians would prefer to carry out the extractions.
